For most backup types yes all backup and restore data passes through the media server (althiough this can be via SAN technology instead of the LAN.)

There are however some combinations that do not (which require specific environments)

NDMP Option - this moves data directly from a supported NDMP Compatible NAS/Filer directly to a library - this however is only useful if the device in question is just basic file storage, if it presents a LUN or is a virtual machine repoisitory then although it will still back this type of data up - you wil have no granular (individual files etc) restroe capability all youc an restroe is the LUN.

RMALS option - this can move data directly from supported Linux hosts to an attached library

I am  not 100% sure if the next one touches the media server or not but mentioning it as a possibility: Offhost backups (part  of the ESO licensing against ADBO) - this can use SAN technology to move the data from supported disk storage to a SAN tape library (it might still go via teh media server though)
