Best Practice for Backing up Exchange on a VM

B77
Level 4

Hi,

Our Exchange server resides on a hyper-v VM.  Currently, I backup the Info stores in a separate job, and then the local drives in another.  Is this the recommended way of doing this or should I be backing up the VM using the agent with GRT enabled?

Also, should I be using the snapshot technology with this?

Cheers

If you have the Hyper-V agent, you should backup the entire VM.  If GRT is enabled, you would be able to restore individual mailboxes from your VM backup.  You can also restore individual files/folders from the VM backup.  This is a more efficient way to backing up your Exchange VM.

Yes.  You should enable AOF so that VSS will be used to snapshot the VM.
