How many Backup Exec servers can be managed by one CASO server? Any best practice document for CASO?

Hi,

As many as you want, but your resources (CPU/memory) would need to allow for a stronger server if you're managing a lot of servers. This would also be dependant on the sort of role you're setting up the CASO to perform (just reporting/delegation of jobs etc).

To give you an idea, my CASO server monitored 26 BE 2010 R3 servers with 8GB RAM and 2 x vCPUs (as a VM).

Hello Shamee,

   t\To give you the exact number the maximum limit for MMS is 90 when the catalogs are centralized, regardless of the version of SQL being used or hardware that is available.

Also can you please tell me the bandwidth that required between Central Server and Managed Server? I would be connecting thru WAN. Actually CASO server will be in Data Center and Backup Exec Server will be in branch locations.

 Refering to the following from the same technote which I posted before:

Management Tips
 

Network Management. It is important to quickly resolve any network issues. Fixed IP's are recommended to avoid any DNS issues. It is also recommended to have a gigabyte network for the CASO environment. Faster the network; better the CASO environment will run. It is also recommended to turn off any power saving setting on the NIC cards. Also replace any NIC cards that appear to have intermittent issues, since problem network cards can cause issues on the network that will impact the performance of the CASO setup.

But since you are connecting the MMS and CAS over a WAN network then in that case it is better to dedicate the backup jobs to the MMS and use CASO server just to administrate the MMS. Also select the option of Distributed Catalog which will help to reduce the bandwidth by keeping the Catalogs on the respective MMS itself and not tranfering them all to the CASO server.

You WAN network should be good to configure the above settings.
