Hi,

My CASO enabled in Backup Exec 2012 server. CASO version is 2012. My question is will this be able to manage Backup Exec 2014 server? Can we add Backup Exec 2014 server as managed backup server?

Hi,

No it won't. If your CASO was BE 2014-based it would manage a BE 2012 server for the purposes of rolling upgrade.

You would need to install BE 2012 on that new server, or upgrade the CASO and any existing media servers to 2014.

This question came while planning hyper-v host backup using backup exec agent for hyper-v. Which version of Backup Exec Hyper-V agent required for taking backup of 2012 R2 Hyper-V Host? is that agent available for Backup Exec 2012?

Only BE 2014 can backup Windows Server 2012 R2...

Server 2012 is supported by BE 2012 and BE 2014.

Server 2012 R2 is NOT supported by BE 2012, only BE 2014.

You cannot take a BE 2014 license and add it to a BE 2012 server, and even if you could, the core product (BE 2012) wouldn't support Server 2012 R2 for instance.

Verbatim from the admin guide:-

Symantec recommends that you do not keep a mix of versions in the CASO installation for an extended time. Key functionality for administering managed Backup Exec servers is missing in a mixed-version environment, which decreases your ability to properly administer the CASO environment.

That being said, a CASO 2014 server can manage BE servers running a fully patched BE 2012.
