Can you run Backup Exec version 10 with Windows 2008 Server?

My company is purchasing a new server which will be running Windows 2008 — will Backup Exec v.10 run with this new system or will I need to upgrade to the latest version?

Nope thats not supported. You atleast need Backup exec 12 to backup Windows 2008. So the bottom line is that you would need to upgrade your media server to 12.0 or Above .Refer the compatibility guide as well
