Cataloging Tapes from one 11d server to another fails

Mark_Patelunas

When trying to catalog a tape to restore from a second 11d server the job fails with an error of "Invalid Physical Volume Library Robot Identifier". The job is a backup to disk and duplicate to tape.

We have tried tapes with encryption and without. All hot fixes are applied. It can read the tapes produced on our old 9.1 system.

We want to have the ability to use our tapes in a different drive connected to a different server, is this possible?

Good morning Mark,

Yes, you can restore data from a tape that was written to in another version of Backup Exec as well as another Media Server.

The error that you are receiving can indicate a couple of things.
Have you run an inventory on all of the media in the media set?
If you do not have all of the media, you can get around this error by going into tools - options
Select Catalog on the left side and deselect "Use Storage media based catalogs" and "Request all media in the sequence for catalog operations."

This will take longer to catalog but it will read all of the data on the tape you wish to restore from.

The drive I was trying to read from died, we got a replacement and I can now read un-encrypted tapes from our other 11d system.

I still can not read encrypted tapes. All of our tapes will be encrypted for off site storage, how do we get our secondary backup system to read the tapes?

Mark,

You will have to create the Encryption key in the media server.

When you said something about 9.x tapes, do you mean you have a password on the media?

No I meant encryption from another 11D server. Do I just create a key with the same name and phrase or is there a way to import the key from the other server?

Just add the key using the same passphrase.

That should do it.

Let me know if you still have issues.
