Changing my OS - how do I avoid loosing my back up activity data

Kevin_Sio

I will be moving to Windows 7 soon and want to make sure I do not loose any of the archive and restore data that Symantec keeps on file.  I regularly back up the catalog file to a RAID.  Can I reinstall Back up Exec 12.5 after the upgrade, move these files back into the catalog and not loose any data.  The actual backed-up files are on a LTO.

Thanks

Kevin

I am disappointed that Symantec and other similar companies do not have back up and archive solutions for the little guy like me.  It is true that my application is on a very small scale, but I work for a very large company.  Customer service just isn't what it used to be.

I hope you were not planning on running your media server on Win7, as it is not supported by any version of BackupExec

Good to know.  What are my options as the move to Windows 7 is going to happen.  Thanks for the heads up!

...you need to refer to the BE 2010 R3 SCL below for information on which OS's are supported:

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH137682

Windows Server 2003 at a minimum though...

You can forget about ever using Win 7 as a media server.  For the next release of BE, you will need a server class OS for your media server.  BE 2010 will be the last release of BE that will support WinXP.  After that, you need a minimum of Server 2003 for your media server.

...fact of the matter is that Windows 7 is a desktop OS, not enterprise material. You need to understand that there are a lot of other facotrs involved here, with hardware support and drivers being an example.

OS vendors also have their requirements, which the backup software vendors end up following, so customer service in this case isn't an issue, and it's not being done to do you, or anybody else in. Windows 7 is limited, hence taking it off the list of supported OS's to act as a media server.

As an example, CA have also taken Windows 7 off the list for ARCserve Backup r16...

IBM don't have it either:
