Completed status: Failed Final error: 0xe000848c - Unable to attach to a resource.

Hi,

I am using Backup Exec 2010 Trial Version 13.0.2896 on a Windows Storage Server 2003 64-bit server backing up a Microsoft Exchange 2007 environment running on a Windows Server 2003 R2 64-bit server.  I am able to successfully backup and verify my Exchange backup, however, I am unable to restore or archive anything on the Exchange server.  When I attempt the restore of an individual message back to it's original location, I receive the following error:

Job ended: Monday, March 08, 2010 at 3:33:18 PM
Completed status: Failed
Final error: 0xe000848c - Unable to attach to a resource. Make sure that all selected resources exist and are online,
and then try again. If the server or resource no longer exists, remove it from the selection list. Edit the selection list properties,
click the View Selection Details tab, and then remove the resource.
Final error category: Resource Errors

For additional information regarding this error refer to link V-79-57344-33932
================================================================================================= I have also included the Debug log for more information. The thing that sticks out for me in the debug log is an "Internal Error" for an "Invalid Device", but since I can still write a backup to the device I am restoring from (a NAS share) I don't understand what this error means. ***************************************************************************

In the Restore Job, I have tried to use the credentials of the Backup Exec service account that was created following the steps in the Backup Exec 2010 Admin Guide, I have tried the restore as a domain Administrator and also as a local Administrator on the Exchange server.  All of these return the same error.  The mailbox is online on the Exchange server because users are able to send and receive email messages.  So it must be a problem with the credentials from Backup Exec server, but I am at a loss as to what the problem is.  Can someone help me shed some light on this?

Thanks,
Paul

Problem solved

Thank you Craig for your help, I went back and uninistalled the Remote Agent on the Exchange server and am happy to see that the Add or Remove Programs was able to remove 99% of the remote agent.  I still had to go into Registry and remove a few more registry keys, but they were very minor and probably not necessary to remove.

I also deleted the Exchange mailboxes and accounts I created for Backup Exec 2010.

I then created the Exchange mailbox for the Backup Exec 2010 service account.  This time, I went further than the instructions when assigning the Exchange permissions.  I used the Exchange Shell command "add-mailboxpermission -identity $USER -AccessRights Fullaccess -user BE2010Service" where $USER was set to each of the mailboxes I wanted BE2010 to manage.

Then I installed the Remote Agent on the Exchange server and still had trouble with the restore.  So I then set the Service credentials for

Backup Exec Agent Browser, Backup Exec Device & Media Service, Backup Exec Job Engine, Backup Exec Server and all the Enterprise Vault Services to log on with the BE2010Service account.  I also checked the "Grant Backup Exec system service rights to the service account" in the Service Account Information screen when I changed the service account information.

 Now restores and archiving works!

Hi,

Have you tried creating a new user account with the same permissions, and then using that again?
I have also attached 4 tech articles to read through:

http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/305824.htm (actually for BEWS 12.5, but may spark something!)

http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/288370.htm

http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/288508.htm

http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/327019.htm (troubleshooting the above error!)
