Compression Ratios are backwards?

Hi Everyone

Our backups have been using 2 tapes of late. The job gets about 75% of the way through and then asks for overwritable media, and completes on the second tape. However, we are using an HP Ultrium 215 Extearnal drive with a 100/200GB capacity, but only backing up approx. 75GB. When you look at the compression ratio we are getting, it says 0.538:1! This can't be right. My understanding of this is that the data being backed up is being expanded in size by half a much again. This meeans for every 1GB of data, the software is expanding it to 1.5GB. Question is, is the drive itself at fault here or BE? We are currently running BE9.1 with all the latest updates. Your thoughts on this would be apreciated.

Hello,

Regarding compression we request you to see the following technote:

Hi Folks

It seems that the backup drive itself was at fault. We have now replaced it with a new one (Ultrium 232 External), and the backups so far seem fine.

Thanks
