Compression

I've seen a lot of older threads about compression issues.

Here's my situation.

I have a HP Ultrium Autoloader 460 using Backup Exec 10.0d

I had been running a backup to disk with a duplicate job to tape and getting compression.

I've changed from backingup to disk to going straight to tape and the compression is gone.

I have compression enabled on the device and my setting for the job is Hardware, otherwise none.

Here are my stats from 1 device:

Backing up 75G to disk then to tape shows it compressed to 55G from disk to tape.

Backing up 75G direct to tape shows it compressed to 75G or nothing. I am positive compression is enabled.

How can I get compression from disk-disk-tape but zero from disk-tape?

Kent,

You have probably checked this, but go to the "Devices" tab, right click on the Tape Drive, go to "Properties", then select the "Configuration" tab and make sure that "Enable compression" is ticked.

Yes, compression in enabled.

I've read several older threads here that seem to suggest that Backup Exec 10.0d has an unacknowledged and unrepaired issue with compression. Is that true?

Hi,

Make sure that firmware and the drivers are updated to the latest.

Latest drivers for v10d: http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/285593.htm

Refer to the following TechNote on compression.
http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/199542.htm

To isolate the issue, perform the same backup using NTBackup. Observe the compression ratio.

Thanks!
