Consolidating backup solutions

JeyesIS
Not applicable

Our scenario is this.

We currently have 2 blade servers running Symantec Back Up exec

Server 1

Windows 2003 R2

Symantec Backup Exec 2010

Connected via Fibre to an IBM 3100 Tape Library with a LTO3 tape drive attached.

Server 2

Windows 2003 R2

Symantec Backup Exec 12

Connected via Fibre to an IBM 3100 Tape Library with a LTO4 tape drive attached.

Currently both servers back up directly to tape differentials everyday and full backup's every weekend.

What we want to do is consolidate them both on to a new Windows 2008 R2 server with daily incremental backups to B2D folder(s) and a weekly backup to B2D which will run overnight then dedup them to tape during the day.

The B2D folders will be on a SAN that the new server is connected to.

The questions I have are:-

Can we migrate both version of Backup Exec DB's into 1 Backup Exec instance (considering they are both different editions) and if so how?

Can we connect the new instance of Backup Exec to both tape libraries and intelligently direct jobs to both devices?

Are there any gotcha's I need to be aware of before attempting this?

There is a possiblity that we will be upgrading to the latest version of Backup Exec prior to migrating the data.

Any hints appreciated.

Its not possible to migrate and merge 2 BEDB's in to 1

Other option is you can upgrade both the media server's at the same level and then set up a CASO -

MMS environment.

You can connect 2 or more libraries to the media server. For every additionaly Tape drive in the library
you need a LEO license.

Hi,

If you want to consolidate your backup infrastructure, you'd do the following:

1. Install BE on that new server running BE 2010 and connect the libraries to it. Make sure you have the correct LEO licenses installed otherwise some of the drives in the libraries won't work.

2. Recreate your backup jobs and selection list on the new server. This will also create your media sets.

3. Grab a copy of the Data/Catalogs folders on the other media servers, and uninstall BE off them.

4. Push-install the RAWS agents to the servers you want to back up.

5. Catalog the tapes on the new media server, and move into the correct media sets in order to protect them properly.

That's if you want to consolidate...

IF you want to continue using your current media servers, then you'd need to do the following:

1. Install BE on the new media server, and install the CASO option.

2. Upgrade your media server running BE 12 to BE 2010. Grab a copy of the Data/Catalogs folders before doing so.

3. Connect those media servers to the CASO, and choose to either centralise your information on the CASO or replicate data between the media server and CASO.

For further information on what the CASO can do, read the TN below:

Thanks!
