Hi,
What is the difference between continuous protection server and Back up exec media server. In what scenario do i require CPS.
Do i need to buy to separate option to activate CPS.
Please help.

I think you should not spend too much time on CPS. Notice have been given that it is retiring soon, i.e. it may not be part of the next release of BE

CPS stands for Continuous Protection Server and it's kind of a replication s/w. It lets you replicate the volume or the data from one server to another (Destination server). It's a Disk Based Solution and cannot be used for Tape backups.
Backup Exec allows you to perform backups to disk as well as to tapes. It doesn't do replication, howeve, you can schedule the backup as per your requirements and also can be used to perform disaster Recovery of a server. The data backed up by CPS can be protected using Backup Exec to Tape.
Backup Exec also has verious Agents and Options to backup Oracle, Linux, SAP, Exchange, SQL, File Servers et al. However, with CPS mostly you perform the backup of File Serves.
