Daily Full backup on "dedicated" tapes for each slot

Hi,

I've done a search but could not find anything for BE12. The only thing I've found that pertains to our requirements is this but it's for netbackup. http://www.symantec.com/connect/forums/daily-full-back-new-tape

Essentially, we're re-doing our entire backup scheme and we would like to dedicate each of our four slots to a specific day for a full daily backup e.g.

Slot 1 = Monday
Slot 2 = Tuesday
Slot 3 = Wednesday
Slot 4 = Thursday + Friday

Slots 1-3 will retain the tapes in their respective slots and overwrite each week. Slot 4 will be swapped out at the end of each week for off-site storage.

What's the best way to accomplish this?

Windows 2k3
Backup Exec 12
HP Ultrium 2-SCSI LTO

Thanks.

Firstly, you'll need to partition your tape library, see my article for details:

https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/articles/backup-exec-12-and-multi-slot-robotic-tape-librarie...

Once you've done that, you'll need to create 1 selection list including all items for your full backup, then 5 different backup jobs, one for each day of the week.

Target each specific backup job to the specific partition (or tape) that you'd like and that should ensure that you get the right data on the right tapes.

To add to Scott's answer

for Mon-Wed use a media set with a 6 day OPP (Overwrite Protection Period)

if you want THU and FRI on the same tape, you need to either make the FRI job Append, or run the same job THU and FRI, defined as Append, else Overwrite with a different media set and OPP

I'd probably go with two jobs, THU as Overwrite and FRI as append to the same media set
