Data Recovery Question

Hi All,

I'm new on here so excuse the following stupid question:

I want to test a disaster recovery of my exchange server. I have a clean windows 2003 server. My question is do I need to install exchange before I recover from a backup or can I just recover from the backup and that will restore the system and application?

Thanks
Bob

You need to install exchange first. Here is a link to a technote that if you read it will give you a general idea as to what would need to be done.

this one is better :)

Bear in mind that Exchange will need to see Active Directory before you can start the Mail System Attendant Agent. The system attendant agent must be started before you can restore your information store.
If this is a "Live" recovery, fair enough. If this is a test then it may not be wise to recover the Test exchange server while online. You may want to recover a DC also and get them talking offline.
