Device Priority..... Unable to change that.

Hi,
I am trying to set the priority of Devices in Backup Exec 10d-SP1. After setting the priority the value come back to the default value of 10 of all devices. I have installed MP1 of BackupExec but in vain. What is that issue? I am following the exact instruction mentioned in the admin guide.

What is the issue? Is there any problem with BackupExec. That is really bad for me to manually select the devices. Or is there any other alternative to do that.

Hi,

The Priority field is only available when the drive belongs to a drive pool and is selected for viewing, under the drive pool icon.

Drive properties displayed under the robotic libraries or stand-alone drives icon do not display the Priority field.

Please refer to:

Definition of terms within the various tabs of the Drive Properties dialog box

I think this is a bug in Backup Exec. I change the value, close the program, re open it and it reverts back to the default value. New installation with all available veritas updates installed..

Apparently this issue was reported back in Oct 2005! No resolution yet?

Hi,

Currently the workaround for the issue would be to set the priority before running the job.

This is not a work around as there are far too many jobs to for the "Central Server" to manage!

Hello,

Try using media management properties as they take predence over drive priority.

Thanks,

You have to elaborate.
Are you talking about Media Sets?
If you are talking about Media Sets, How does this relate to Job Failover?

Did a search in the Admin Manual for "media management properties"; nothing returned.

Hello,

When the priority of the drive in the drive pool is changed from default value of 10 it does not stay changed when one of the following conditions is met.

1.Recycling the Backup Exec services.

2.Exiting the Administration Console and opening it again.

3.Hitting F5 few times whilst the Administration console is open.

All the above actions reset the priority value back to 10

WORKAROUND:

Use the rules of ADAMM to manage tapes rather than the priority of the drive.

Please see the technotes for the same:

An explanation of the "Overwrite Protection Period" and the "Append Period"

Update:  They haven't fixed it as of July 10, 2007 !!  It's a fairly useful -- even necessary -- function, especially for those of us with multiple backup devices, if only it worked!  The work-arounds discussed in this thread are just that:  work-arounds that don't have the utility of the function they are work-arounds for.

Here's the doc that acknowledges the problem: http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/288173.htm .  Note the comment that it is "under investigation".   Obviously it is NOT under investigation.
