Did BackUp Exec really save my Active Directory?

aceint

Good morning everyone!

I have a question as I tried to save the System State (especially in order to recover the AD in the worst case) via BackUp Exed (2010 R3) for the first time. Until now, we only saved the volumes with this tool.

Now I wonder if it really saved the AD and if I could really recover it from what it has copied overnight. The reson why I am wondering is that when I start the recovery agent out of BackUp Exec 2010 R3 and - just for a test - click on System State --> Active Directory, the field says "Keine/r", which is german for "None" or "Empty". See screenshot at the following link:

I would be so grateful if someone of you sirs would help me solve this issue / irritation of mine. Thank you very much in advance!

Best Regards

Sebastian

Do you have the Backup Exec Active Directory Recovery Agent installed and licensed ?

...it's going to save the System State and to recover AD you'd have to restore this to a server and run the relevant MS recovery mode.

If you want to backup AD in terms of GRT (item-level recovery) you'd need the agent for Active Directory and THIS will show you your items in your selection list (which is what you're currently missing).

Thanks!

Hey guys!

Thank you for your quick replies! Honestly, I do not have ADRA installed - will do this by tonight's time. THANKS for the hint. But besides this, according to CraigV's response (if I did not get it wrong), I already got my AD and system state saved, just not for single user restore etc.? Is this right? So, in clear words: if my server crashes (for example both HDDs) and I manage to set it up again with new parts, then I could already restore everything including the AD from the backup I just got right now?

Thanks for your effort!

...you need to follow Microsoft's DR procedures for recovering AD via a System State restore.

Thanks!

DR = Desaster Recovery, I guess? Are there any documentations regarding this procedure? Couldn't find anything via Google. :(

Thank you very much!
