Differential backup saves unchanged files

The job logs show that differential file backups are saving files unchanged since the last full backup.  There were no errors reported in the full or differential backup.  Most of the files listed in "Backup Set Detail Information" were never accessed much less changed.  The modified times were checked using Windows Explorer.  However, the backup uses the Change Journal which I don't know how to check.

Job Log:

AOFO: Started for resource: xxx. Advanced Open File Option used: Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS). The snapshot provider used by VSS for volume D: - Microsoft Software Shadow Copy provider 1.0 (Version 1.0.0.7).

Backup Method: Differential - Using modified time

Some AV scanning will cause this to happen.  If you have SEP, see my blog below for the solution

If you are using other AV, then you might want to check with the vendor if there are similiar work-arounds.

We're using a much older AV.  Symantec Antivirus 8.

However, this problem is recent.  There have been no changes to this server, however BE 2010 was upgraded from r3 to r3 sp2.
