Driver Update - MSI Error

Hi,

I'm trying to run 'BackupExecTapeDeviceDriverInstall_273853' on multiple Windows 2003 servers in an attempt to get external tape libraries recognised. On the vast majority of these servers the update fails with the message:

The wizard was interrupted before VERITAS Windows NT and Windows 2000 Device Drivers could be completely installed.

At the same time an error is logged in the Application Log as follows:

Event ID: 11708
Source: MsiInstaller
Type: Information
Description: Product: VERITAS Device Driver Install -- Installation operation failed.

We've been searching all week for a fix for this. We've tried unregistering the MSI service and re-registering, this worked on one server, but has failed on all others. We've now updated the Windows Installer to the latest version, again this looked like a fix, but it still fails on the majority of the servers.

I found a very old newsgroup post via this site that talks about it being a problem with MSDE. The post says it's something to do with the file version of MSDE being out of sync. I've ran the Component Checker from MS and it does seem to show a couple of files as different versions. The majority of files are version 2.80.1022.0, but the following files were of different versions:

SQLOLEDB.DLL - v2000.85.1022.0
MSORC32R.DLL - v2.575.1022.0
SQLSRV32.DLL - v2000.85.1025.0

The newsgroup post talks about Veritas providing new versions. However the post is from 2003, so I'm not sure if it's still relevant. The original post is here - http://tinyurl.com/mtsbm

I've done a verbose log of the install, however the file is very long at over 500k. I've put a copy here in case anyone wants to look at it - http://s40.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=34NZF5JFPOJ7J0S6NUJW3S6O2U

Many thanks in advance to anyone who might have a fix for this. We've got over thirty servers that need this update...

Hi, thanks for your reply shweta rege. Unfortunately after running the repair and rebooting the box, I get exactly the same error when trying to run the update :(

There are a few other links on that page you linked to, so I'm going to dig around them and see if I can find the answer. Any other ideas much appreciated though :)

I've still been unable to find a fix for this, does anyone have any more ideas?

Cheers,

Hi Nick,

Try downloading the drivers again from this link:

VERITAS Backup Exec (tm) 9.1 - Device Driver Installer (20050115) - Includes Tape Driver Release (20041231) and Robotic Library Release (45) (Intel Only)

http://support.veritas.com/docs/273853

Also let us know what is the version of MSI that you are currently using.

Download the latest version of MSI 3.0 and then try running the installation.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/884016/en-us

Also make sure that you are not running the installation via Terminal services.

Hope it helps!

Hi Nick,

I had the same issue some days ago (BE9.1). After a while or two, I found out that I had to stop manually the MSSQL$BKUPEXEC service before installation.

Good luck,
Freddy

Hi,

Thanks for the replies. We think we're found our own solution and that is to re-install Backup Exec when we get this issue. One of the fixes posted above was to do a repair of the install, but this didn't work. You would have thought that a re-install was the same thing, but apparantly not. So far it has worked about five or six times, so fingers crossed it will keep working for us.

We had downloaded the fix a couple of times, but this made no difference. We also tried updating the version of Windows Installer, as we are using a very old one. However, even though it worked on the first server we tried, it failed on multiple following ones. The fix I've detailed above is working on servers without updating the Windows Installer service.

Thanks for the help everyone. I'll try stopping the SQL service as Freddy has suggested, if and when we get the problem again.
