Hi,

Please find my infrastucure below,

EMC VNX Unified - Lun / NAS

Backup Exec 2015

Windows 2008 R2 FileServer

EMC Datadomain (DD Boost OVer FC)

HP Tape Library over FC

All above deivce where zhoned, each can see the other deivces.

Queries,

1. Windows File server

we have assinged Lun from EMC SAN (Lun) for Files shared over network.

                     A. Backups of files transmitting over LAN, not through FC. Is any option to backup through?

                     B. First backup target to Datadomain, Can be duplicated to Tape Library?

2. EMC Datamover (NAS)

                    A. NDMP from EMC Unified to Datadomain to Tape Is possible?

                    B. Single file restore is possible over NDMP?

Please give me Good Solution and Suggesstion!

Hi,

1A - If Backup Exec is installed on the file server with the FC LUN assigned to it, then backups would be local and on the SAN. If the file server was a remote server, then even with an FC LUN attached to it, backups would be run across the LAN. You would need SAN SSO which is part of the Enterprise Server Option to allow the file server to be backed up across the SAN. read below for more information:

1B - Yes it can be. However, if deduplication is being used, the data will be rehydrated when dupicated to tape to bear this in mind.

Thanks!

Hi CraigV,

Thanks for your reply,

i need more clarity on Question 1A,

File Server has lun from EMC VNX and it configured as Disk used for Shared Folder,

if i share and configure the same lun to backup exec server as a drive and take the backup from Backup        Exec server itself, will that our issue ?

Thanks,

Murugan. S

No, why would you want to share a LUN that has critical files on it with the media server?

You would load the remote agent on the server and run backups across your LAN, or use SAN SSO with with the Enterprise Server Option license and backup directly to the SAN and then on to the tape. BUt you need SAN SSO to accomplish this. And a full installation of Backup Exec on the file server.

Thanks!

You should be using BOOST over ethernet so you can use client side boost features or client-direct. FC is not necessarily faster, just more costly, especially when talking unstructured files. If you insist on FC for the client, move to netbackup and use a san client or san media server.

Offhost might work for you assuming the environment is fully supported.

However check out this blog for information that may help you as your environment may not match any of the LAN free setups that are available in Backup Exec.
