Hi,

I want to Backup Exec CASO for managing other Backup Exec Servers? Can I install CASO in a VM in that case? VSphere 5.1 is the Hypervisor?

Regards,

Hi,

In this case VMware plays no role unless you're trying to backup the VMs through the AVVI agent.

To answer the direct question, yes...a CASO is fine as a VM. I set up a CASO as a VM in our data center to look after 28 sites and it worked like a charm. Your issue will come up if you try to backup to tape with this CASO server, but ideally it's just a monitoring/controlling/reporting server and doesn't do any dedicated backups.

Thanks!

Thanks Craig. Can you tell me the components that need to be installed in CASO server just for monitoring and reporting and alerts? Also I have old versions Backup Exec Media servers. Can i get the compatibility of CASO with old version of Backup Exec Media Servers?

As Craig mentioned, CASO in a VM works.  And is actually IDEAL.  Especially if you have SRM.

Beyond that, CASO should only manage the same version backupexec as itself.  Though you can go 1 version back but only termporary according to Symantec.

As a VM again as Craig mentioned.  Don't use it as a backup server.  Just use it as a central reporting admin server.  If you have to backup anything, to disk is your best option.

Thanks. Also what is SRM?

Can you please provide me a link that explain the procedure to add Backup Exec MEdia Servers in CASO? what will be the umact when we add an existing Backup Exec Media server into CASO? How the catalog change? I read that there is a minor catalog that store in CASO for central restore? How is this working?

SRM = Site Recovery Manager...a VMware product.

Open up BEutility.exe on the server you want to add to the CASO, and right-click the name...choose that option.

Thanks!

Hi Craig, Thanks for the reply.  Can i add the Backup Exec Server to CASO as given below?

Verify that the central administration server is running.

  1. Start Backup Exec at the stand-alone media server.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Set Central Administration Server.
  3. Enter the name of the central administration server.

An informational alert appears stating that the media server will be managed by the specified central administration server.

  1. Click OK.
  2. Restart the Backup Exec media server.

Regards,

You can, yes. But it doesn't give you the option of where you want your Catalogs/Data information to be located...from my experience is automatically centralises everything on the CASO which isn't always optimal.

I did my MMS additions through BEutility.exe as it has more of a wizard to it. It asks you for the IP Address/Name of the CASO and where you want your catalogs located. Check below for more information:

Thanks Craig. So if i run Backup Exec Utility on production Backup Exec server, it will ask me the location of Catalog? right? I want to keep that in the local Backup Exec server only.

...for some reason the Symantec sites do that some times...I posted those links about 2 weeks ago and they worked.

Here's the link for the BE 2012 Admin Guide:

Thanks Craig. So when we run Backup Exec Utility and set CASO, what will happen to the Backup Exec Server? Yes, it will become managed backupexec server. Other than, will we be able to login to Backup Exec Server and do the things that were being done earlier? Also what catalog information will be added to CASO server? (Since its important activity, just trying to understand the entire processes)

Nothing happens to the MMS but it reports into the CASO, and becomes manageable if you choose the correct location for the catalogs.

Yes, you can use BE on the MMS as per normal, no worries.

In my case, CASO was just a reporting tool; a "single pane of glass" to check on the 28 sites I had to manage. This just made management of the environment easier.

Thanks!

Thanks Craig. Thats great. How is the minor catalog information go to CASO? will that happen while adding this?

Also one question on alerts, job status, will CASO be able to forward alerts/job status to an e-mail id or group of email-ids? For eg, a group of users should get mails if a particular backup is not failed?

1 CASO and multipl MBES

On MBES

Open beutility > choose set Caso (standalone BE server becomes MBES)

Restart services on CASO

For catalogs

read this first

http://www.symantec.com/docs/HOWTO73652

Now come on the CASO

Goto the storage tab

locate your MBES and goto its settings

Change Keep the catalogs on

  • Managed Backup Exec server (distributed)

  • Central administration server (centralized)

  • Both servers (replicated)

Apart from the catalogs many settings can be done from the settings option
