Exchange 2003 unusable when information store is being backed up

Hey guys, I turned to microsoft support first for this issue. I have copied the post beflow. When backup exec 10d with latest service pack backups my information store(not brick level) accessing email slows to a crawl.  Which essentially makes it unusuable.  Microsoft recommended using NT backup with their exchange information store plug in(http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx/kb/258243/en-us) and it works great with no noticeable slow down.  So this is obviously a backup exec problem. What are some recommendations to prevent this from happening?

"I have been battling this one issue for 6 months now and have probably read
every microsoft and symantec article I can find and have tried everything I can think of.
I back up my information store on weekdays starting at 11 PM. The log is
below

Backed up 2 Exchange Server stores
Processed 64,556,581,480 bytes in  4 hours,  43 minutes, and  4 seconds.
Throughput rate: 217 MB/min

Although that seems like a long time I can understand a database taking
longer.  I use backup exec 10d with the exchange plugin. The problem is while
the backup is taking place nobody can access their outlook email. Its so slow
it becomes unusable. Like 15-20 mins to open a message.  Since we are a
international company this poses some serious problems.

I looked at is last night while I was having the problem and CPU usage and
Network usage were below %50 as well as RAM.  So resources dont appear to be
the problem.

I have tried the following.

1. Setting the backup job priority as low
2.  Updating my backup exec software
3. removing unnecasary software from exchange server such as anti virus

Any other ideas? Or should I just stop backing up my exchange server nightly
and live with the possibility of losing a weeks worth of email.
