Exchange 2010 Full Backup issues

ITGreg

Hi all,

I have an issue with backup Exchange 2010 DB and not sure where the problem is.

I'm using Backup Exec 2010 R3 with SP3 and Full Backup job for Exchange job is running fine (Job Status - Successful) but when I'm checking Database stats the DB is showing that Full backup never run. This is happening only for DB in one DAG (I have 2 DAG) the other DB in other DAG is working fine

Bit more about my setup.

Backup Exec 2010 R3 SP3

2 DAGs spread across 2 datacenters

All DBs are created via same policy and setup to backup from passive copy only, usign Preffered Server settings, use GRT; Full - Database & logs; backup to disk,

Scenario where everything works:

Backup Exec server installed in Datacenter 1

Exchange DB1 in DAG1 spread across 2 mailbox server in Datacenter 1 and anothr copy in Datacenter 2

Full backup runs fine and mark DB1 as backed up in Exchange Management Console

Scenarion where is not working correctly:

Backup Exec server installed in Datacenter 1

Exchange DB2 in DAG2 spread accross 2 mailbox servers in Datacenter 2 and passive copy in Datacenter 1

Full backup finished with success but EMC is not showing as backed up and Soft-Deleted mailboxes are not deleted.

Anyone have suggestions what could be wrong?

Thanks

Greg

Hello,

Are they Physical machine or Virtual machines?

when exactly do they show the last full back was done on the DB which you are refering to ?

Can you try running a manual job once on that DB and check immediately after the job completes does it show the recent backup (full) was done.. to understand if this is being changed affected...

Hi,

All servers are virtual (on VMware).

I'm trying to run first full backup. Backup Exec Server is showing that Full backup has been succesfull (job log attached).

On Exchange when you check in EMS (get-mailboxdatabase -identity DB2 -status | select *backup* it shows nothing:

LastFullBackup                 :

LastIncrementalBackup          :
LastDifferentialBackup         :
LastCopyBackup                 :
RetainDeletedItemsUntilBackup  : True

and because of that retension is not happening on Exchange. I tired few times manual backup and everytime Beckup Exec is reporting backup is successful and I can restore single object from it but looks like its not reporting back to Exchaneg that backup has been done.

Hope that will clarify a bit my issue.

Hello,

Do you have the Exchange Management tools installed on the Media Server and updated to the same level as the Exchange server?

Also, try repushing RAWs to the remote servers.

Hi,

Management tools are installed and same patch level as Exchange, Tried to re-install RAWs still no success.

Any other ideas?

Hi,
Will it be possible to Create a new Test Mailbox Database and disable the 'Content Indexing' on it.

Add the copy similarly to the nodes in the DAG, as the earlier db.

Run the backup of it.

S

Hi Sasha,

I created test db in same DAG, move few mailboxes and run full backup (with Content Indexing on) and everything run succesfully and Exchange is showing that DB has been backed-up.

The only difference is size (the one which is failing is 1.5TB).

In the event viewer on passive copy (from where the backup is taken) on the end of backup time I can see event:

Log Name:      Application

where it should state "successfully completed". Anyone seen this event before?

Thanks

Hi,

For some reason my last post didnt show up in here.

I've created new DB in the same DAG and on same servers and run backup against it (wit CI enabled), run successfully and I can see on Exchange side that it has been backed up.

So the issue is with one DB (1.5TB in size). I've noticed that on end of backup there is an event on Exchange side:

Log Name:      Application
Source:        ESE BACKUP
Date:          27/11/2013 03:38:27

    <Data>10920</Data>
    <Data>UK-FLT-MBX01</Data>
    <Data>0x6BF</Data>
  </EventData>
</Event>

And should report as succesfully completed. Did any one of you seen this event?

Thanks
Greg

Hi,
this seems to be related with the n/w timeouts while transfering larger chunks of data, please ref the following documents:

Backup Exec hangs on random databases when backing up Exchange 2010 DAG
http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH135465

Backing up passive copy of DAG database ends successfully but results in Microsoft error 0xC8000777 on mailbox server holding active copy of database
