Exchange Server Writer fails during Backup of Exchange 2010

mbjoe

For the past few months we have received the below errors about once/twice a month. The error occurs when backing up a Windows Exchange 2010 database running on Server 2008 R2. The Backup Exec job is running on a Windows 2008 R2 machine running Symantec Backup Exec 2010.

I have checked the writer status and they are listing no errors and all are stable. Nothing strange appears in the Event Viewer. The job is doing a full backup.

We restart the Exchange Information Store everynight before the job runs.

Error is below:

We have tried this solution in the past yet still get the error on a monthly basis. It does not seem consistent as to when it happens, but we get the error once or twice a month.

Hi there,

Have you run vssadmin list writers to check and see if your writers are all stable?

THat said, does it happen on the same days when you get this error? If so, it could indicate something running on your servers that is causing a clash during the backup.

Laters!

Hi there,

To confirm the status of VSS writers, on the affected server run vssadmin list writers from command prompt

Follow the document to re-register the VSS writers on the exchange server . Reboot will be required

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH70486

________________________________________________________________________________

If issue is still not resolved

* Stop the Microsoft Shadow Copy Provider &Volume Shadow Copy Service

* Export the contents of the HKLM\Software\Microsoft\EventSystem key to a .regfile

Warning:Incorrect use of the Windows registry editor may prevent the operating system from functioning properly. Great care should be taken when making changes to a Windows registry. Registry modifications should only be carried-out by persons experienced in the use of the registry editor application. It is recommended that a complete backup of the registry and workstation be made prior to making any registry changes.

* Delete the HKLM\Software\Microsoft\EventSystem\{26c409cc-ae86-11d1-b616-00805fc79216}\Subscriptions key. (Do not delete the EventClasses key).

Restart the server.

- The deleted key will be recreated

* Run the"VSSADMIN LIST WRITERS" command.

This causes the VSS entries in the HKLM\Software\Microsoft\EventSystem\{26c409cc-ae86-11d1-b616-00805fc79216}\Subscriptions key to be rebuilt when the writers initialize.

- Try backups after that...

The VSS writers are all listed as having No Errors and all are Stable.

The error does happen once a month, but there is no consistency on the day the failure occurs.
