Exchange restores won't complete after changing Backup Exec Logon Account

Hi all,

I am about at the end of my rope with this.

Back-ups run fine but I am unable to complete any Exchange restore jobs.  When trying to restore a Public Folder item I get 0xe0001781 - The object was not found, or could not be accessed (Exchange restore).  And when trying to restore items to a user's mailbox I get 0xe00002f8 - Cannot open one or more mail messages because of unknown MAPI errors.

We are running Backup Exec 2012 on Windows Server 2008 SP2 and Exchange 2007 on Windows Server 2003 R2.

Restores used to work fine, but since we changed our Backup Exec Service Account restores started completing but then staying in a "dirty shutdown state" pending recovery.  I then changed the Backup Exec log-on account to be the same as the Service Account and have done everything laid out in this KB article: http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH51740&profileURL=https%3A%2F%2Fsy....  I have also added the account in Local Security Policy in all the places that the old account was added.

I have even worked with Symantec support to make sure the account is added correctly!  Does anyone have any ideas on what I'm missing?

are you restoring from tape or from disc? If from tape try a duplicate to disc job and restore from there.

Hi,

Backup Exec service account needs to have creator owner rights on public folder you are trying to restore to.

Thanks for the idea!  I am trying to restore an entire folder that didn't originally have that account added to it.  I added the account as Owner to the parent folders and still no luck.  Do you think I could create a folder with the same name, add the Service Account as owner and then restore the individual emails to "original location"?

Please verify that the backup exec service account has an active mailbox that is unique and unhidden from the GAL

Yep, the mailbox is all fine -- it is visible and sends and receives mail.  Also have added the account to all administrative roles in Exchange, domain admin, local admin, and all appropriate Local Security Policies

Tried this and still didn't work.  Permissions on public folders doesn't seem to be the issue!

Have tried those already --Today upgraded Exchange Management Tools on media server to SP3 to match the mail server.  Still no luck.  Also noticed Exchange MAPI-CDO 1.2.1 on both servers is version 6.5.8069, while the newest version is 6.5.8244.  Maybe will try updating this and see if it helps.

Ted ,

I would suggest you go ahead and log a ticket with Symantec so that the issue can be looked at in more detail. If you would like please feel free to PM me the case number as i would be happy to work it with you.

Thanks for all the advice!  Was able to resolve both issues last night.

To get the public folder restore to work, I needed to duplicate a full backup to disk and then restore from there.

To get the mailbox restore to work, I needed to create a new mailbox on the destination server and connect it to that user's AD account.  I then needed to also check "recreate user account and mailboxes".  Not sure why, but that's the only way it would work.
