Excludes in BU 11d

Even if I added exclusions in the Excludes buit-in selection list, files and folders are still backed up. Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Windows 2003 SP1
Backup Exec 11d Rev. 6325
Hotfix 2
Hotfix 6
Hotfix 9
Hotfix 11

Excludes in the buit-in selection:
\\*\*\Temp\*.* /SUBDIR /EXCLUDE
\\*\*\Recycler\*.* /SUBDIR /EXCLUDE
\\*\*\*.tmp /EXCLUDE
\\*\*\pagefile.sys /EXCLUDE

"Temp" and "Recycler" directories and *.tmp files are backed up. Pagefile.sys is not!

Email help is out for this product so Symantec says to use the Forums. But nobody from Symantec replies to it. Wow! Maybe it's because we only bought over 75 licenses and over 90 agents for tens maybe hundreds of thousands of dollars worth??

Use the ** wildcard instead of the single *. The single * only replaces that specific folder level, so in your examples you are specifying ONLY that one level and one location.

The ** wildcard will exclude the file or folder ANYWHERE on the system.

For example, try \\**\*.tmp /EXCLUDE or \\**\Temp\*.* /SUBDIR /EXCLUDE

Your pagefile exclude probably works because it happens to point specifically at that path. I would gather that some of your tmp files backed up are from different folder levels than the one you specified.

When I try the syntax you propose I get the "no selection exist for this ressource" error message.

\\**\ in the path field and
*.tmp in the file field

When I say OK to the error message it puts back the path to \\*\*\ and then it acceps the path and file fields.

Try

\\*\**\*.tmp
\\*\**\TEMP\*.*

So that would be "any server\(at any level)\*.tmp etc

Leave the Path at c:\ (or whatever drive letter needed)
Put "**\*.tmp" in the file section (minus the " ")

Ken,

When you say

"Try

\\*\**\*.tmp
\\*\**\TEMP\*.*

So that would be "any server\(at any level)\*.tmp etc"

can you be more specific about what you would enter in the Path and File fields in the Include/Exclude Files window?

I cannot use D B info because I want this exclusion to be on all and any drives.

Thanks

path would be

"\\*\*\**" (Any server\Any Share\Any Level on that share)
and file would be *.TMP

and

\\*\*\**\Temp
*.* /subdir

(I haven't played with exclusions for awhile. but those should work

I'll try that. The server accepts the synthax you proposed. The results are:

\\*\*\**\*.tmp /EXCLUDE
\\*\*\**\Temp\*.* /SUBDIR /EXCLUDE

Thanks
Serge

Well it might work in windows  but how do you get the excludes to work with netware drivers?.
Have tried to use the wildcards but it dosent work at all on my network drives.

You need to modify the NOVELL.NKS file to make exclusions for NetWare backups. See the following for more info:

So you are telling me that the built in exclude selection lists dont apply to Novell Netware? at all?

Ken,

What if you wanted to exclude mutliple file types on all servers.  Do you have to create an exclusion for each file type or can you seperate the file wildcards with a coma?

Path: \\*\*\**\
File: *.pf

or

Path: \\*\*\**\
File: *.pf, *lg, *.lk, *.st

You need one entry per file type (Bummer)
