Hello,
Recently I have review all my policies of backup to introduce the differential backup. Unfortunately I cannot get rid of this error:
Failed to mount one or more virtual disk images. Restores that use Granular Recovery Technology may not be available from this backup set
Here ar the log of the job when triyng to restore a file (using GRT)

This issue has a workaround for BE 2010, however this issue is fixed in BE 2012 http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH172844

QuentinF,
Is this restore from a Deduplication folder and are you seeing Event ID: 50000 with Source:PDVFS in Windows Application Events ?

Are you trying to restore from a differential set?
Can you try to restore from a full set?
As far as I remember there was an issue restoing a file from a GRT VMDK backup if the backup set is incremental or differential backup.
You can club full and restore selections and try the restore the file.

Hello,
Thanks for your reply.
Yes i have updated to the latest version, and no I have absolutely no error due to backupexec in the event viewer. I've checked my credentials and they are all ok. I'm gonna retry a restore today and keep you updated. Thanks for your help

Hello,
Yes I was testing a restore of a differential backup from a disk. and it failed
but I've now tried a restore from a full backup and It worked. So I presume the issue to restore from a differential backup using GRT is still open issue for symantec ?
Thanks

Thanks for your answer, I just have a little question. I don't understand this part of the workaround:
My backups are based on RAWS in a policy with a full and a differential backup. On what else could thy be based on ? So if I understand correctly the only way to make the GRT works is to upgrad to 2012 or to extract manually the data we need by doing a redirect of the backup ?
THanks

There are 2 ways you can backup a virtual machine
= From the Vmware host/Vcenter (Using VMware Agent/AVVI), in this you have multiple VMs in the selection list under a Vmware host
= By installing the remote agent for windows (RAWS) on individual Virtual machines, you are backing up individual vms as normal servers.
The error that facing is if the backups are done via the vmware agent
If you want GRT from diff or incremental you will have to upgrade to BE 2012 or backup he machines as an individual server using the agent based backup (RAWS)
If you mean redirecting of the entire VM`s VMDK , you might want as well select the full backup set along with the diff.

Now I understand, but actually I'm backing up my VMs using RAWS, the agent is installed on every VM. But still the GRT in Differential backup doesn't work.

Can you take a screenshot of the selection list and upload it here?

Here's my selection list, when I do a restore, I select the ressources under the bios/FQDN name of the selection.

If you are backing up using
= Vmware agent backup with File level GRT option enabled, in the restore you will see 2 entries
1 > to restore the entire VM /VMDK(via the host)
2> To restore individual files and folder (via the fqdn /hostname)
= Vmware agent backup Without the File level option enabled. In the restore you will see 1 entry
1 > to restore the entire VM/VMDK(via the host)
= RAWS backup will show you one entry in the restore selections
1> To restore individual files and folder (via the fqdn /hostname)
So it does not matter if you use RAWS or GRT backup using the VMware entry the restore will show the FQDN of your server.
What we mean by RAWS backup is in the backup selections you dont selec the VM from under the VMware host but you will select the VM as an individual server.
This kind of backup will help you restore individual files and folder from diff backup

Wow Thanks, I finally understand.
I will investigate and try to do all my backup using RAWS.
Thanks for your help
