Hello,

Any assistance with this eror would be appreciated.

Our Daily Incremental backups work properly.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

When we do a weekly full backup of the same data with the only setting changed on the job is the Backup Method is Full Backup Files - Reset Archive Bit.

We are running v9.1 SP4 of Veritas Backup Exec on a Windows 2003 server.
We are using a Gateway 820 Autoloader tape drive with LTO1 tapes.

Note our Incremental backups work properly.

Job Log:

Job Completion Status:

Job ended: Sunday, February 12, 2006 at 7:40:44 PM
Completed status: Failed
Final error: 0x17 - Data error (cyclic redundancy check).

Final error category: Other Errors

Errors:

Backup - \\JAX-FS01\shared Storage device "JAX 820 TAPE DRIVE" reported an error on a request to write data to media.

Error reported:
Data error (cyclic redundancy check).

Also when we run the full backup jobs the servers that are accessed then report errors when logged into the console:

Application popup: cmd.exe - Application Error : The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000142). Click on OK to terminate the application.

The server must then be rebooted

Hello,

The Error that you are getting is a generic error and is usually due to the hardware / drivers.

To resolve the issue you may follow the steps given below.

1.>Insure that that tape drive has veritas tape drivers installed. You can download the latest drivers form the link given below.

http://seer.support.veritas.com/docs/265501.htm

If there are still errors check the hardware including the SCSI cable and insure that the device is terminated properly.

You can refer the technote below for CRC errors.

Shweta,

Thank you for your feedback.

We have reviewed the drivers and SCSI settings. It would seem that if we had a driver or SCSI setting problem the errors would also occur on our incremental backups. They do not. The incremental backups work fine.

Changing the setting for Backup Method for Files from Full - Backup Files - Reset Archive bit to Full - Backup files - Allow Incrementals and Differentials using Modified time seems to have resolved the issue for now. We need to continue testing to be sure and to make sure that we are backing up everything that we need to each weekend.

Hi Jim,

Have tried running the backup on a backup-to-disk folder instead of a tape device for test purposes.

Verify if it is still giving the same error?

Also install the latest drivers for better functionality:

VERITAS Backup Exec (tm) 9.1 - Device Driver Installer (20050115) - Includes Tape Driver Release (20041231) and Robotic Library Release (45) (Intel Only)

http://support.veritas.com/docs/273853

Also install Service pack 4a for Backup exec 9.1 4691:

VERITAS Backup Exec (tm) 9.1 for Windows Servers revision 4691 - Service Pack 4a - Includes Critical Security Update

http://support.veritas.com/docs/280008

I ran a backup to disk today and it appears to have run properly.

The drivers have been re-installed (a few times over the last few months).

Service pack 4a is already installed.

I will see what happens with the backups tonight.

Thank you,

Jim
