No, the array doesn't support NDMP. It is supported in NDMP backups. The protocol itself is not run on the StoreOnce at all.

That doc says that using a StoreOnce as a VTL you can do backups from a NAS running NDMP. NBU controls the backup process of the NDMP NAS to the VTL, but the StoreOnce plays no role in NDMP at all.

Thanks!

Check the Hardware Compatibility List - https://support.symantec.com/en_US/article.TECH227895.html

Per the HCL, it shows HP StoreOnce 4000 Backup System is supported for NDMP and it includes HP 4500 as a supported model.

It is present in the list. Look at pg 53 of the HCL and at the attached image.

Would u post a larger screenshot ?

And are there any errors in the Windows event viewer and the adamm.log ?

Is the HP storage device connected directly to the BE media server ?

HP Product Bulletin doesn't show the StoreOnce Backup systems as being supported at all for NDMP.

Refer to the QuickSpecs below:

http://www8.hp.com/h20195/V2/GetDocument.aspx?docname=4AA4-3329ENW&cc=us&lc=en

This shows that the target for backup apps (such as BE) is Catalyst (if supported), CIFS, NFS over Ethernet, or VTL. NDMP will not work for this appliance.

Thanks!

Quite interesting since another whitepaper from HP shows NDMP is supported for StoreOnce systems - http://h20195.www2.hp.com/V2/getpdf.aspx/4AA3-9999ENW.pdf?ver=1.0

adamm.log shows various errors such as  -

HARDWARE FAILURE

MISSING DEVICE

Waiting on a busy command to device HP

Would recommend to contact the hardware vendor and confirm if everything is fine at the storage end or not.

Just to clear this up

Page 53 of the HCL is actually in a section heading for VTL (and not the NDMP Option section)

What the NDMP column in this section means is that it is possible to attach the VTL to a supported NDMP Storage Array and then use the NDMP Option to backup the storage array directly to the VTL. It does not means the device itself can be directly protected using the NDMP option.

The storage array devices that support the NDMP Option are listed in a different section of the HCL and yes there are no HP devices listed in the NDMP Option section  (which starts on Page 127)

BTW the NDMP option (in the Backup Exec world) is a way to move data from an NDMP Option Compatible disk array (as a source) to a directly attached backup storage device (Tape Library or VTL) It is not a way to use an NDMP Tape server as a location to backup any data sources to.

General recommendation when reading the SCL or HCL documents - try not to use search or find, try to go to the chapter or area based on titles or headings.  However if you must search then always check which chapter or section you are in.

Interesting as that document implies supported by NetBackup but does not state Backup Exec
