Help needed with catalog tape errors

We had a file server die on us and needed to restore a tape onto another server. Both servers were running Backup Exec and using Seagate DDS tape backup drives.
When we insert the tape into the new server, we attempted to invenory and catalog the tape that was from the old server.
after about 30 minutes and 11.5GB of data cataloged, it fails with the following message:
"e00084ca The data being read from the media is inconsistent"
Using what catalog we were able to get, we managed to restore some of the data from the tape.
Is there any way that we can "skip" past the corrupted part of the tape and read what's left on the drive? Besides a drive recovery company, is there any any utility or software that we can get that will know how to jump over this bad spot and continue?
Thanks in advance.

I assume you have removed the tick from "Use media based catalogs"?

I dont' think we have. What does that do?

If you remove that option (Tools, Options, Catalog), it tries to read the contents of the tape by scanning the tape, rather than reading a catalog off the tape. It supposedly takes longer (though it takes just as long on our system), but is better when there may be media damage, or media missing from a set.
