How to Protect Backup Exec itself?

h_tavakkoli

We know Backup Exec can protect software and data. But the question is when we backup everything with Backup Exec, How we can trust this software and rely everything on it?
I mean what is the solution for protecting Backup Exec from failures, crashing, loss of data, loss of catalogs and Database currupt?
Shall we take backup from Backup Exec again manualy or with other Backup Exec or some other Backup software installation?
Suppose you backuped everything and your Backup Exec software is corrupted for some reason which cannot be used to reach your backup data and restore them! This whould be a complete disaster!!!
Anybody has information about it?

Hello

You can always take a backup of the Symantec folder from the program files. This folder contains the DATA & CATALOGS

folder which can be used to rebuild the software in case of disaster recovery. However the MDF & LDF files will be skipped

during a backup which hold the database of BE. If you have noticed BE runs a daily DB maintenance during which a copy

of the database is created in the form of BEDB.bak. This file can be used to recover database using BEUtility. So if you have a

copy of BEDB.bak and catalogs folder you can recover from the disaster recovery scenario

Once you have your backup fully function you will not be changing things frequently in the Backup Exec like jobs and policies.

The best way in this case is to backup the DATA and Catalog folder manually located at  c:\program files \symantec\backupexec.

You have to stop all the BE services and bkupexecsql service in the services. Once stopped you can take the backup of data and catalog folder.

In case of disaster you have to just install the same version of BE again and stop all the BE services and bkupexecsql service and replace the DATA and CATALOG folder from what you had backed up before.

Start all the BE services and your BE should be up and running the way it was before.

And with these services stopped, how do you backup those folders?

BackupExec does a SQL Backup every day (at 0400 by default).  As long as you have the latest BEDB.BAK file, you can use BEUTIL to restore/import it into a newly installed medai server

If you backup the Backup Exec server in its entirety, then in the event of a disaster, you can restore using the Manual Disaster Recovery section of the Administrator's Guide.

It can be a bit long winded, but it works, and when Backup Exec starts up for the first time it will automate the restore of the database from BEDB.bak.
