How to read files that are stored on tapes?

We are running Symantec Backup Exec with a Windows 2003 Server.

Our backups are stored onto Maxell 170m/ 36gb tapes.

We have deleted the "media created..." information within the catalogs of the RESTORE tab. Therefore we do not know what is stored on some of our tapes.

Is there any way to access the information saved on these tapes without the "media created... " list?

We have lost some important documentation that may be installed on these tapes, but at present we cannot access the tapes.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

You would have to either restore the catalogs folder on the media server from before the date you deleted the information. Or insert each tape into your library/drive and then run Catalog jobs on each tape to regenerate the data.

As you don't know which tapes might be critical - wouid strongly recommend using the write protection switch/tab (that is part of the media cartridge) on all of the tapes so that they cannot be accidentally overwritten if any backup jobs start.

Thanks very much for you quick reply Colin.

Do you know where we would find the catalogs folder on our system?

Thanks again

By default it is called catalogs and created below the BackuP Exec Program Files folder

Attempted to run a full restore of the catalogs from a previous backup, the system said the backup was successful however the catalog list remains unchanged.

If we load a tape how do we run catalog list for the individual tape?

Thanks very much for your assistance, much appreciated.
