Incremental Acts as Full During Server Swaps

ITVince

Hello,

We hit a reoccuring issue every quarter that consumes many more AIT tapes then we'd like to use, it's also a maintenance pain. Here's the issue.

Every now and then our production file servers come off lease, we receive a new server in and the data is transfered from the old to the new file server.

Yesterday we transfered 1.5 TB of data from the old file server to the new and took the old offline.

We had a full back-up of the data run on Friday. After the server swap, when our incremental job ran, it treated it as a "Full" back-up. I'm sure this is becuase it sees the data as being 'changed or modified' since it was transfered from one server to the next.

Is there anyway to avoid this?

You could try setting the Full and Incremental jobs to modified time to see if it makes a differnce however it kind of depends on what is reset when the files are written back to the server.

Archive Bit will probably be set and modified time may also be changed meaning neither method would achieve what you are after.
