Dear BE froum members,

I'm new at BE, and I need your advices regarding BE.

I got order to create backup job in BE 2012.

We have single tape drive and BE 2012.

I want the cartridge not ejected.

For the backup setting is Incremental from Monday until Thursday and Full backup on Friday.

I want to keep the data for 7 days backward.

Then overwrite the expire media.

My plan for this job are:

Media set: OPP 6 days and AP 1 hour.

And 'When this job begins': Overwrite.

Is it correct?

Thank you in advance.

Do you want your full backup and all the incremental backups to be on one tape?  If so then you need to

1) set the AP to 6 days

2) set the full backup to overwrite

3) set all the incremental backups to "append, otherwise overwrite"

4) you need to change your tape after the Thursday incremental and BEFORE the Friday full backup.

This presume that you can fit your full backup and all the incremental backups on one tape.  Otherwise, you would need to change the tape sooner.

Dear pkh,

Thank you for your prompt reply.

Regarding point number 4, I'd like to keep the cartridge in the tape drive. Then I will eject it manually with the new tape.

Is it possible?

Thank you, pkh.

Dear pkh,

Then for the OPP, there's no need to set the OPP (1 hours), am i correct?

Thank you.

No.  The OPP must be set to 6 days because you want a 1 week protection.

Yes, provided the size of your full backup and all the incremental backups do not exceed the capacity of the tape.  You should turn on compression to give you maximum tape capacity.

Hi pkh,

Thank you for your help.

I'll try to summarize the information from you.

The plan:

- Incremental backup from Monday until Thursday.

- Full backup on Friday.

- Using the same tape. Never eject.

- Since the Full backup will take around 500 GB space (I use LTO 5 cartridge - 1.4 TB), then we want the tape to be overwrite (btw, is it will overwrite the whole tape or just the expire media?).

- Want to have the backup data until 7 days (1 week) backward.

Your advice are:

- Full backup: Overwrite (is it will erase the whole cartridge or only the expire media?)

- Incremental backup: Append otherwise overwrite.

- OPP: 6 days

- AP: 6 days

Is it correct?

Thank you in advance, pkh..

When you specify overwrite, BE will start writing from the beginning of the tape, thus wiping out all the previous data on the tape.

The rest of your settings are correct.
