Inf Store backup fails with 0xe0008488 - Access is Denied

We upgraded a system from 10d to 11 that is running Windows SBS 2003. Before, we had brick-level and database-level backups scheduled for Exchange. With the upgrade, it seems legacy backups are enabled because the brick-level is still in the selection list.

The organization has a number of disabled accounts, and in order to avoid failing in the past, we've manually de-selected those accounts under the brick-level backup. However, with 11, the database-level/information store backup is failing with 0xe0008488 - access is denied (Access denied to database). I've tested the logon account for the information store - it's fine. It actually appears to back up the information store pretty much in entirety by the amount it processes successfully. It did work for a little while without errors on 11, but I believe started failing when we disabled another account in Active Directory. Any suggestions?

I saw http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/286144.htm cited on another post - I haven't set the log settings yet, but I'm pretty sure this is the case for me.

However, what I want to know is, is there any way to selectively disable backing up specific mailboxes in 11 when brick-level is selected for the Information Store? There are user accounts that we disable for a reason - we don't want to delete them right away, and we would rather not have backups fail whenever there is a disabled user on a system.

Phil,

in 11d if you are using the "legacy" backup of exchange mailboxes, you can expand the information store and deselect individual mailboxes. If you are using the Granular Restore Technology(GRT) then you cannot deselect individual mailboxes, as you are capturing the information store as a whole.

It's pretty common practice to disable a user account rather than delete it immediately when it is no longer in use. For those companies using 11d and GRT (which is touted as what should be used now for individual message item backup/restore), you're telling me once they disable a user account, all of their backups are going to show with a failure status and there's nothing they can do about it except switch back to legacy brick-level, or delete the user account?
