Is my LTO3 drive slow or the software? + other question

Hi
I have two servers on server 2003, exchange on one of them
9.1 build 4691 backup exec (didnt know symantec had taken over!)

1. My LTO3 (Dell powervault 110T) shouldnt be that slow at backing up, but im getting the same time to back up as my LTO1 drive (8 hrs to backup 65Gb across both servers, inc exchange mailboxes) IS THIS RIGHT!??
Quoted backup speed is 288GB per hr.

2. My LTO3 drive is upto date with firmware and windows drivers, but the dell man said that the veritas, sorry symantec drivers for this drive might need updating, but i cant see where this is listed in the backup exec or on the symantec site? is this right?

3. Where in Backup exec 9.1 can i select hardware or software compression i cant find it

Thanks vey much for helping

Simon

1) Mailbox backups are EXTREMELY inefficient and slow. Check your job logs for the time each step takes to complete. If you have a fair sized Message Store, I'd bet that alot of the time is being spent on these alone

See http://mail.tekscan.com/nomailboxes.htm for a discussion of mailbox (or brick level) backups using BackupExec v8 and v9

2) Go to http://support.veritas.com/content_ddProduct_BEWNT_view_DOWNLOAD.htm and filter for v9.1 and drivers to get the latest Driver pack (may not make that much difference, see #1 above)

3) Each job description should contain a Compression option HW only, HW else SW, SW only and none. Be aware that you will probably never see 2:1 compression. That is mrketing hype, not engineering promise. Realworld figures are closer to 1.2-1.3:1 See http://support.veritas.com/docs/199542

THanks,

Server A has the backup drive attached
Server B is on the LAN

Checking the logs was handy, why didnt i do that earlier.

The problem (slow) point is im also backing up a PC (used for archiving). This contains 900,000 files (38gb) and the throughput on this is 122mb/min. This section of the backup is taking 5 hours ish.

Some Other back up information
Information store (exchange) 12gb @ 732mb/min
Public folders (exchange) 2gb @ 22mb/min
Exchange mailboxes 5gb @ 29mb/min
Server A data 106Gb @ 432mb/min
Server A c:drive 1.9mb @ 555mb/min
Server B c:drive 100mb @97mb/min

Thanks for your help inlocating the slow part, this other PC is on a 100mbit network port, i might upgrade it to 1000mbit and see how that helps , the servers are on 1000mbit

GB network should help a little, but a whole lot of small files will always backup slower than a few large files totally the same total amount of data.

But your mailboxes and Public Folders will always be a problem

makes a bit of a mockery of quoting speeds of 288gb/hr really

They should include a typical real life speed
