LTO4 tape encryption and reading media labels

Hello,

We use LTO4 tapes and have hardware encryption enabled.  Does anyone know if the "media label" (i.e. tape name) of the tape is readable when hardware encryption is enabled if it the tape was attempted to be read by someone without the encryption key and passphrase?

We know our backup data is encrypted but we aren't sure if that extended to the "media label" on the tape itself or if that would be visible during a catalog/index event without the key/passphrase.

Thank you,

Geoff

I would assume you'd be able to read the media label if it were a bar code and you tried to browse it from the library, but not within BE until you entered the pass-phrase.

Thanks!

Inventory job will, as far as I know, run without an Encryption key - which in theory means the label should be readable. Catalog (and restore) jobs need the encryption key.
