Licensing Enhancements in Backup Exec 21

Backup Exec 21 introducing secure download and ease of license update by synchronizing with licensing portal.

How it is beneficial to me?

Downloading licenses is now more SECURE:

Benefit: This ensures security and compliance when dealing with your Entitlement IDs.

  • In an upgrade scenario, Backup Exec installer will automatically try to download the new licenses after authenticating with VEMS.

Benefit: Removes the user intervention of having to add the Entitlement IDs manually or import .slf files during upgrade.

Updating licenses is now made EASY:

  • Backup Exec will periodically auto sync renewed maintenance contracts from VEMS (if and when available).

Benefit: This will remove the manual intervention that is currently required to update the licenses.

There are no additional requirements or pre-requisites from within the product.

Also if users would like Backup Exec to download the license (.slf) files for given set of Entitlement IDs, then the user will need to provide the Veritas Entitlement Management System (VEMS) user account.

This account should have the permissions to download the license files for the given set of Entitlement IDs.

Let’s know more about it...

Downloading licenses is now more SECURE:

Fresh Install:

For a fresh install of Backup Exec, the user can license the product in two ways:

  1. Provide the Entitlement IDs in Backup Exec using the ‘Enter an Entitlement ID’ box. User will then be prompted for the VEMS user account. This account should have the permissions to download the license files for the given set of Entitlement IDs.

If the account details are correct, the installer will contact the VEMS licensing portal and download the relevant license files and import them into the product. Rest of the Backup Exec installation remains unchanged from this point.

  1. If the user has Backup Exec 21 licenses are already downloaded, they can import the license files using the ‘Import LicenseFile button.

With Backup Exec 21, user can now import multiple license files in one attempt unlike previous releases.

Notes:

  1. If the entitlement ID(s) are inactive or invalid, Backup Exec will report an error appropriately.
  2. For Backup Exec to be able to download licenses for all Entitlement ID(s), the credentials used to connect to VEMS should have permissions to all the Customer Accounts that the Entitlement ID(s) belong to.
  3. If the Entitlement ID(s) are spread across different customer accounts, then please ensure one VEMS user account has access to all of these Customer Accounts.

Upgrade Install:

When user upgrades from an older version of Backup Exec to Backup 21 (or higher), the Backup Exec installer ‘Add Licenses’ page will be automatically populated with the Entitlement IDs tied to the older version of the product. On the next screen user will be prompted for the VEMS user account. This account should have the permissions to download the license files for the given set of Entitlement IDs. If the account details are correct, the installer will contact the VEMS licensing portal and download the relevant license files and import them into the product. Rest of the Backup Exec installation remains unchanged from this point.

For e.g.

  1. User has Backup Exec 16 installed and the Entitlement IDs tied to this install is A08330xxxxx, A16297xxxxx, A19311xxxxx and A53908xxxxx. When user starts upgrading to Backup Exec 21, the ‘Add Licenses’ page in the Backup Exec installer will automatically have these entitlement Ids listed out (Pic 5).
  2. When user clicks on the Next button, user will be prompted for Veritas Entitlement Management System (VEMS) user account. This account should have the permissions to download the license files for the given set of Entitlement IDs.
  3. Once the account is provided, the installer will contact the VEMS licensing portal and download the relevant license files and import them into the product.

Note:

  1. If the entitlement IDs are inactive or invalid, Backup Exec will report an error appropriately.
  2. For Backup Exec to be able to download licenses for all Entitlement IDs, the user account provided should have permissions to do so for ALL the entitlement IDs.

If the Entitlement IDs are mapped across different VEMS user accounts, then Backup Exec will not be able to download all licenses.

It is currently designed to handle only one VEMS user account. Hence it is recommended to have all Entitlement IDs mapped to a single VEMS user account.

  1. If the auto populated Entitlement IDs are not applicable or have errors, then user can remove them from the list and proceed.
  2. If the user has Backup Exec 21 licenses already downloaded, they can remove the auto populated Entitlement IDs and then import the license files using the ‘Import LicenseFile button.

Updating licenses is now made EASY:

Once Backup Exec is installed, Backup Exec Management service will run a periodic check and download any licenses that may have been renewed on expiry.

The user can also run an ad-hoc check using the ‘Synchronize Entitlements with Licensing Portal’ link provided in the ‘Licensing Information Widget’ in the ‘Home’ tab within Backup Exec UI.

Note:

  1. An informational alert will always be raised when user triggers the sync operation manually.
  2. If user does not want Backup Exec to do a periodic check, they can opt out of this functionality by disabling the ‘Enable auto synchronization of the licenses with the Licensing Portal ‘checkbox available in Backup Exec Settings à Preferences.
