Migrate BE2010 database (SQL 2005) to BE2014 (SQL Express 2008)

Hi All,

I am currently in the process of migrating our existing BE2010 DB to our soon to be new BE2014 server in a different machine. I have already created a backup of the BE2010 DB using SQL management studio. I just want to know the best way to have this loaded on to the new BE2014 Server.

Questions:

1) I was told that to do this, I need to have the new destination BE2014 server renamed to the same hostname as the old BE2010 server. I was told this is needed to avoid having to configure the DB from the inside and out. Is this really necessary?

2) This link seems to suggest that I can do the migration live with the 2 instances of the DB and Backupexec running. Is this the better option for me?

Thanks in advance.

In this case, what you are trying  to do (migrate the BEDB) is not tested and may or may not work.

If you do not need to keep your jobs, etc., it may be better to do a fresh install of BE 2014 and import your existing catalogs to this new installation.

Hi,

So ideally you'd upgrade to BE 2014 on your current server to minimize the amount of work that you would have to do on the new server...the TN below might also help you:

Hi CraigV,

Unfortunately, upgrading the current box is not an option for us. We will just be taking whatever we can off of it for use on the new machine. Any leads on how to proceed given this scenario? Thanks.

Why can't you upgrade BE to BE 2014 on your current box?  Everything else, like OS, on the box remains the same. From your other discussion, you are running Server 2003 R2 on your current box and BE 2014 can run on this OS.

Hi pkh,

Unfortunately, current Server 2003 R2 is a really old server with one 60GB drive. At any given time, it only has less than 10MB since it is almost full. Basically, this is the reason why we cannot upgrade on it and why it has been decided to transfer BackupExec on a newer server with more drives and disk space.

Hello,

Thank you both for all the help. In this case, I ended up installing fresh and just transferring the catalogs from the old BE server. I just recreated the jobs.

However, I have another upgrade like this to be done in 2 weeks. Since I have more time to prep and test in the lab, I will try CraigVs link.

Again, thank you very much!
