First you have to do this as a failsafe measure but not to use it as the backup / restore method ,
http://seer.entsupport.symantec.com/docs/274778.htm

Download BE 12 (so you'd have a 60 day trial).  This is what you should use to copy all of the configuration, jobs, etc to a new 60 day trail installation.

Stop SQL(BUEXEC) service
move c:\pgm files\BuExec\Data to c:\pgm files\BuExec\dataold
move c:\pgm files_BuExeCatalog to c:\pgm files\BuExec\catalogold
Uninstall BE
Install the BE trial
Install any updates / patches / hotfixes that you had applied to the original installation
delete anything in c:\pgm files\BuExec\Data
delete anything in c:\pgm files\BuExec\Catalog
Stop SQL(BUEXEC) service
copy the contents of the corresponding dataold to data folder
copy the contents of the corresponding catalog old to catalog folder
Reboot the server, services will start normally and all the old job defs, schedules etc will be intact.

Note that you move from the same server, same equipment, same server name etc.  To the same.

Hello,

The best way of Backing up Backup Exec is as follows.

1  : Stop all BE Services.
2  : Stop the SQL Service for Backup Exec
3  : Go to the install directory (C:\program files\symantec\backup exec -- Default)
4  : Copy the DATA and the CATALOGS folders on a safe location.

Assume that the trial period is over.

Check the Service Pack and the patch level before performing the following steps

Example : SP1 and Hotfix 123456, 789012 only installed

1  : Uninstall Backup Exec
2  : Install Backup Exec again in trial
3  : Install SP1 and Hotfix 123456, 789012 only
4  : Stop all BE Services
5  : Stop the SQL Service for Backup Exec
6  : Go to the install directory (C:\program files\symantec\backup exec -- Default)
7  : Remane the DATA and the CATALOGS folders to DATA_OLD and CATALOGS_OLD
8  : Copy the DATA and the CATALOGS folder which were kept in the safe location
9  : Start the SQL Service for Backup Exec first and then start all the Backup exec Services.

Now we are Ready for next 60 days...
