Dear all,

Good Day……

One of my valuable customer wants to buy backup exec 15 software.

He wants to install backup exec 15 software on virtual server (windows server 2008 or 2012R2)

And HP tape library will be directly connected with backup exec 15 server. As per my knowledge tape library must be directly connected with backup exec server.

So my query is if backup exec 15 software is installed on virtual platform (OS: Windows server 2008/2012) then LTO5 tape library is supported or not supported on backup exec server in virtual platform??? Please confirm us.

Also customer has below mentioned requirements:

  1. Take backup & write to LTO5 Tape Library running from SYMANTEC BACKUP EXEC (VM) Server.
  2. 3 Agent’s fully capable to take Backup from ORACLE, Any DB, VM, FILES, & store as required.
  3. Need a DC-DR, VM, and Backup System Solution using backup exec solution.

So, give a feedback on above requirements also.

Best regads ,

Monsur

Nor that the document is only valid for VMWare ESX 4.x. It is not applicable for ESX 5.x or Hyper-V

Specifically the Note in TECH130609 defining alternative configuration does apply and applies to all versions of Backup Exec with regards to using a virtualized Backup Exec Server with a physcial tape library.

There is one  supported configuration - if the tape library can use an iSCSI connection and is listed on our Hardware Compatibility List (HCL) as supported with an iSCSI connection then it would be supported with a virtualized Backup Exec Server.

Oh and whilst VMware did, with older versions of ESX, release documents relatining to passing through using certain Adaptec SCSI cards (they changed the documentation with newer versions) , Microsoft have never supported any form of tape device pass-through into Hyper-V, hence we cannot.
