New install, no errors messages, inventory goes on forever, tapes not recog

I have just installed 11d onto a SBS2003 with a Archive Python 06408-xxx SCSI 20-40GB tape drive. Hardware is shown as working with the Symantec tape drivers installed. New and old tapes have been tried. However the tapes do not seem to be recognised. If a inventory job is run, it continues for hours and eventually needs to be cancelled.

Any help much appreciated.

It sounds like there is a problem with the tape drive reading the media. Since you've tried both old and new media I think that rules out any kind of media problem.

Many times when you see a problem reading media it can be resolved by updating the driver of the scsi card. In this case make sure you get the latest driver for the card from the manufacturer website. Other potential fixes are turning off sync negotiation and lowering the transfer rate for the ID of the tape drive. One other possible problem that immediately comes to mind is to make sure the scsi card is not a RAID card.

You should also check out the technote at the link below as it has much more for troubleshooting hardware.
