New tapes showing up with question mark (?)

I put 20 new tapes into our tape library, HP MSL4048, ran a scan on the library and then did an inventory in Backup Exec 12.5.  All of the tapes showed up with a yellow question mark next to them in Scratch Media.

What is the correct process for new tapes to be correctly recognized in Backup Exec 12.5?

Go ahead and run the backup, the tape would be recognized if you do have a bar code reader. Otherwise, first run a label operation to give media labels manually. If you do have a bar code reader, the tapes must already have taken a bar code label. So, once you run first backup, the question mark would disappear.
