Offsite replication of a De-dup folder

Hello,

I am looking for advice on how to optimise my backup and disaster recovery problem.

I have a small shop that is using backup exec 2010 R3.  We only have about 400GB of data to backup,  I sucessfully backup to a de-duplication folder on a local disk array.  Full backup is done on Friday and incrementals are done M-Th.  The question is how to store the back data offsite without tape.  I have a VPN connection to a remote site with pleanty of storage - but the pipe is slow.  It can only do about 23 MB per minute.

The question is: whats the best methoid of replicating the data offsite using the VPN?

I tried a job where it just backed up the de-dup folder - setting a full backup one a year and incrementals for the rest of the year.  That worked but I noticed that the data being moved during the incremental backups was far too low - only 1000 bytes or so - I thought maybe it had something to do with the archive bit?  Could I tweek this to make it work?

I also tried duplicating backup sets after my local job finishes, but it takes far too long.  Each friday the new full backup would finish in a few hours, while the duplicated backup set would take about a week...

Any and all advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Hello there.

You can use the CAS-MMS setup and then use the Optimized Deduplication option to backup the data to the remote server through limited bandwidth channel.

Check this technote :

http://www.symantec.com/docs/HOWTO23341 : Copying deduplicated data between deduplication storage folders or OpenStorage devices by using optimized duplication

To perform optimized duplication between a central administration server and a managed Backup Exec server, the following WAN requirements must be met:

  • Less than one percent packet loss during transmissions
  • Less than 250 milliseconds network latency (round trip)

Few more technotes for reference"
