Overnight Backup Failure - 9.1 rev 4691

Hi

Could anyone help...?

I am running a Windows 2000 server, with a sony DLT SDX-500V : AIT 64K

It is set to backup around 40gb of data per night at 1am in the morning. The server backs up a USER drive and an Exchange Directory.

When i reboot the server, the BKEXEC service is "running" and there is a tape in the drive (which is labelled and tested).

At 1am the backup starts but times out at about 20gb and produces this error...

In a window "Job Log Display Error" - "D:\veritas\Data\BEX01100.xml"

If i click OK it goes to the usual log screen but the log is in plain text (JOB LOG POSTED BELOW)

The job fails and then ejects the tape.

IF i start the service again by going to "Tools --> Backup Exec Services --> Start All Services" and then put a new tape in, that night the backup will work.

I have tried this process twice this week now and the same thing happens each time. Yesterday i applied the following patches to the Backup Exec program

- be4691RHF47_275354.exe
- be4691RSP2_275247.exe

Your Help is much Appreciated

Does the backup always stop when backing up the Exchange Storage Group?

By the looks of the logs it was really slow in the first place - and it looks like it eventually timed out.

If the backup always stops on the Exchange Storage Group, check the Event logs on the Exchange server for any errors, especially from source ESE.

Also try using NTbackup to backup the Storage Groups - if this fails as well - then there is an issue with Exchange.

Could also be Anti Virus for Exchange making the backup go really slow - if it is - Ntbackup will also exhibit the same symptoms.

Hi

Yes it only stops during Exchange Storage Groups...

I have also learned that if Exchange Maintenance is running @ 1am-5am that could affect the backup process

The Backup Exec backup runs at 1am too

I have reset the Backup Exec schedule to run at 10pm tonight and the Exchange maintenance schedule to run at 2am-6am

Do you think this could be a reason for it?

Thanks

Possibly - see how tonights backup goes.

Also do a search for ESEBSLI2.DLL - you may have a number of copies of it, and they are different versions - this can stop the backup from happening - BE is using the wrong version.
If you do have a number of different versions - probably the one in your exchsrvr directory is the right one - rename the other ones and restart the BE Remote Agent service.

Hi

I have searched for that 2 times now and both times it did not find anything. I have decided to recreate the job and start again with it. If this does not work i do not know what to do...

I tried backing up just the F.S.Group using ntbackup and it worked, it seems to be the Verification Process that is failing

Thanks
