Permissions assistance required to backup Exchange server 2010 with BE2012 to tape

abstrakt
Level 3

Environment :

Windows Server 2008 - Non domain controller.

Exchange Server 2010.

Backup Exec 2012.

I have followed the instructions for scenario four found at http://www.symantec.com/business/support/index?page=content&id=TECH130255#Exchange_Agent however I'm still unable to pass Credential test for our Microsoft Information Store\Mailbox Database <random number>, although I am able to pass Credential tests for Microsoft Information Store\Public Folder Database <random number>.

In backup select I've selected the whole server and "Simplified Disaster Recovery" is On and highlighted in green.

If I try and expand Microsoft Information Store\Mailbox Database <random number> in the selection list I receive the following error :

===SEO===

Browser Failure : Failure to browse 'Mailbox Database <random number>'. Backup Exec could not backup the Exchange database because it could not find a healthy copy of the database.

===SEO===

Backup attempts fail with the following error.

E0000391 - Backup Exec attempted to back up an Exchange database according to the job settings. The database was not found, however. Update the selection list and run the job again.

Please note : After any changes I have remembered to restart the Backup Exec services. I've even restarted the whole server (out of desperation) but my situation didn't improve.

I've spent a couple of days on this now! Any help will be gratefully received!

Is Backup Exec direclty installed on the Exchange Server?

If not try a reinstall of the Remote Agent.

If yes try a repair install of Backup Exec.

If this was helpful please mark this as solution.

Have you checked this TN:  http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH125261

Thanks for your reply Kiran.

I hadn't seen TECH125261, however I had read elsewhere that the Backup Exec user required the "Organization Management" role and followed alterative instructions to set that up.

In "Active Directory Users and Computers" I navigated to domain.local -> Microsoft Exchange Security Groups ->  Organization Management and added the Backup Exec user to the group.

I believe the end result is the same as following the instructions in TECH125261 because when I've just followed those instructions I found that my Backup Exec user was already listed.

Sorry, I should have explained that Backup Exec is installed on the same server as Exchange.

While preforming a Repiar of the Backup Exec installation I spotted the following warning.
About Backing Up Exchange 2007/2010 Servers
To support individual mailbox message and folder restore from Information Store backups you must do the following:

- For Microsoft Exchange Server 2007, download and install the Microsoft Exchange Server MAPI Client and Collaboration Data Objects package version 06.05.7888 or later on the Exchange 2007 server. The package can be found on the Microsoft Web site.

- If you are backing up a server running Microsoft Exchange Server 2010, that server must be running either Microsoft Windows 2008 SP2 or a Microsoft Window Server 2008 R2 x64.

To back up Microsoft Exchange Server 2007/2010, you must install the corresponding version of Microsoft Exchange Server Management Tools on the Backup Exec Server. You can install the Microsoft Exchange Server Management Tools during a custom installation of Microsoft Exchange Server 2007/2010.
I have confirmed that the server is running Windows Server 2008 R2. I assume that as BE and Exchange are on the same server I already have Microsoft Exchange Server Management Tools installed!

After completing the Repiar of the Backup Exec installation and the required reboot I've tested the permissions and its not resolved my problem. In fact, its now telling me I have permission problems with Microsoft SQL Server -> BKUPEXEC, which obviously isn't the end of the world but shows the "repair" did change something!?

I'm still stuggling with this. Does anyone have any more suggestions please?

As you have BE on the Exchange server, it might be that you are running into something related to this

Hi Colin,

The article you refer to seems to be related to restoring and my issue is backing up. However in desperation I've followed the instructions in the article without success. :(

i'm experiencing the exact same issue here.

the only differenece is that my exchange server is on a different computer then backup exec 2012

i've added my backup account to every single group that is mentioned during setup. everything works fine, but the logon credentials for information store database, just like in steve's case.

has anyone any idea how to proceede with this? i'm desperate!

Hi, I am also having exactly the same problem.

BE agent has been checked, permissions checked but still no luck getting the Credential test to work for the Information Store.  I have been through numerous KB articles, installed Exchange management tools on the BE server.

This is kind of critical, will lodge a support ticket.

SP1a considered during your troubleshooting?

SP1a is already installed.

OK, spoke to technical support.  We are using a Database Availability Group.  Apparently in this case, the DAG should be backed up seperately, (I can confirm this works) and not to worry about the Information Store being backed up with the actual server in question.  ie The IS has been seperated out due to the existence of the DAG.

The agent is smart enough to see the existence of the DAG and know which server is active or passive etc.

I am unsure if the OP is in the same boat as to whether they have a DAG or not?

I was rather stumped with the E0000391 problem when trying to backup Exchange 2010.

Followed all the solutions:

https://www-secure.symantec.com/connect/forums/information-store-shows-0kb-cant-backup-exchange-2010-be-2010-r2

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH140090

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH126587

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH137852

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH180429

Still had no luck.

My setup was Server 2008 SP1 64bit, Exchange 2010, Backup Exec R3 fully upto date

Solution I found after doing all the above is to right click the job and do Test Run before running the job then when you run the job no more E0000391.  If the job is changed to backup to a different medium the E0000391 will come back and the Test Run must be run again to get rid of the E0000391 error.
