Hi there, my IT manager requested I try to get some answers for him regarding Symantec Backup Exec 2010

He understands that we can purchase Symantec Backup Exec 2010 console with a few agents. HIs questions are as follows:

1) Can we purchase additional agents as we need?
2) Can we backup using those agents to locations other than where the console is located?
3) Can we specify where we want those agents to back up to, and schedual them individually (from the console)  or is it an all or nothing thing?
4) Do we require to buy multiple consoles for each of the storage servers we own, or can we just use agents?

1) Can we purchase additional agents as we need?

Absolutely.  Either directly from Symantec or from most corporate resellers.

2) Can we backup using those agents to locations other than where the console is located?

You can backup to a tape drive or library locally attached to the media server (the server that BackupExec is installed on) or on a SAN.  You can also backup to any NTFS share the BackupExec service account has access to local or network

3) Can we specify where we want those agents to back up to, and schedual them individually (from the console)  or is it an all or nothing thing?

You can create a job that will back a single resource (computer, share, database) or a larger job that backs up serveral .  Symantec does recommend that database backups be separate from flat-file backups

4) Do we require to buy multiple consoles for each of the storage servers we own, or can we just use agents?

Each Media server will have it's own console, but you can also purchase the CASO (Central Adin Server Option) and manage them from a central console

City: Winnipeg
Backup Exec 2010 Fully installed with console

City: Toronto
Backup Agent installed
Server has local tape drive attached

Question:

From the Winnipeg Console can we control, and make the backups in Toronto backup to their local backup device?  Or will the console only recognize backup devices attached to the media server directly in Winnipeg.

The BE media server, which you refer to as the console, can only control tape drives connected to it.

In your scenario, the Toronto server would need to stream data to the Winnipeg server and the data needs to be stored on a tape drive attached to the Winnipeg server.  The tape drive attached to the Toronto server would be useless in this case.

If you are just backing up the Toronto server and wants to control it from Winnipeg, then you don't need the remote.  Install BE on the Toronto server and make it a media server.  That way it can back up data to the tape drive attached to it.  In Winnipeg, on any server or PC, you can install the BE remote console to control the Toronto media server.  You don't need any license to install the BE remote console.

If you are also doing backups using the Winnipeg server, then the best way is to buy a full BE license for the Toronto server and make it a media server.  In this case, you don't need to buy a remote BE agent for the Toronto server.  You can then control the Toronto server by connecting to it either by a remote BE console or using the BE program on the Winnipeg server.

If your organisation is going to grow, you can consider using BEWS CASO (Central Administration Option). Not a free option as it needs a license to enable it, but you could designate another server as a CASO server, point your media servers to this, and then use 1 console for administration.
Consider this if you start adding more sites, or backup servers to your environment.
