after extensive research I finally got my backup to work correctly with the rd1000 backup device. I wanted to share this info to help others not spend 3 days for a total of 20hrs trying to do this.

This link will show you how to setup the device. The instructions are for backup exec 10 and 11 but it worked perfect for 12.5.

This link will help you setup your job. I used the wizard. I am using 1 cartridge with 300gb space. I am doing a backup everyday and when the tape is full I wanted it to overwrite the oldest backup on the tape. These instructions also allow me to use more cartridges when my client will spend the money buying more. All I have to do is put in a new cartridge when it is full. I will have to change the overwrite protection period. With my current backup size I was able to set it for 10 days. That means that at the current backup size of 20gb I can go back 10 days to restore. As we get more tapes I can go further out.
The guy in this link is complaining about the rd1000 but someone replied to it with good info.
