Hi All
One of our clients is using BE 2010 for SBS 2008 with a standalone tape drive. In the past we used to get cleaning alerts from BE but when the cleaning tape was used the alerts got stopped. But since couple of weeks ago we started to get alerts on a daily basis even after using the cleaning tape. The cleaning tape is not less than 3 months old and not been used for more the 2-3 times. Also the cleaning light on the tape drive went away after the last cleanup but we are still getting the tape drive cleanup alert from BE.
Already performed the cleaning statistics reset hoping to resolve the issue but it did not help at all.
Any help on this is greatly appreciated.
Regards
Dhanushka

Hi,
That sounds like a faulty tape drive to be honest.
If the tape constantly asks for a cleaning tape to be inserted, I'd get hold of your manufacturer's diagnostic utility (HP has Library and Tape Tools for example) and run the diagnostic wizards against it.
This will show whether or not there is an error on the drive.
Thanks!

Hi Craig
Thanks for your reply but guess i should have explained a bit more.
The alerts we get are the email alerts from Backup Exec not from the drive itself.

Yes, but BE is receiveing signals from the drive that it needs cleaning,
Try the manufacturer's diagnostics and see what they say (be sure to shut down all BE services before runnng them)

Hi All
sorry for the delay in getting back but we hit another speed bump
The tape drive in question is Quantum Ultrium 3 but the driver installed is from symantec.
When we try to run the diagnostic tool (x-talk) from quantum we get that there are no tape drives attached to the system .
1.Could this be due to symantec driver?
2.If so how can we overcome this issue?
Thanks
Dhanushka

You got to stop all the BE services first before running the utility.

Hi pkb
It’s the same result even after stopping all BE related services.

If you have stopped all the BE services and your Quantum utility cannot detect the drive, then it is definitely something wrong with your tape drive. You would need to contact Quantum to resolve the problem

Hi All
It appears there was indeed a problem with the tape drive. We informed our client to use the cleaning tape twice, back to back and the issue appears to be resolved.
Many thanks for all your replies and feedback.
