Sorry Bob, but unfortunately Backup Exec media server can't be installed on a Widows 7, Vista, XP or any other workstations. BE media server has to be installed on a server machine ONLY.

Hi Bob,

What is your current BE Version?

Was the backup you have is from a Win 7 machine or some other OS?

Is the backup on a Disk or a Tape? If Tape then what is the make and build of the tape?

Is it something which you are proactively asking or you tried and got any error? If you have tried it already then what is the error you are getting?

Hi! I dont have a current version of BE... thats what I am trying to figure out, I backed my wifes pictures up using 10d onto a portable disk. I have tried to install 10d, 2010 and 2012 - but, all it will let me install is the remote administrator portion but NOT the actual backup exec server.

Rather, I meant to say BE 10d doesnt work with windows7

Hi,

BE 2010 should let you restore BE 10d data. Download the ISO below and leave all the licenses in trial mode (certainly the media server license would be all you needed if you are restoring pictures)...

http://trialware.norton.com/files/fc/Backup_Exec_2010_13.0.5204_MultiPlatforms_Multilingual_DVD.iso

Obviously add the B2D folder, catalog the information, and in the restore tab, make sure the date selection is either correctly selected, or not selected at all (to show you everything).

Thanks!

Hi Bob,

Best way to check the compatibility is the Software Compatibility List (technically called as SCL)

Backup Exec 2012 Software Compatibility List (SCL)

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH175581

Backup Exec 2010|2010 R2|2010 R3 Software (SCL)

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH137682

Backup Exec 12.5 Software (SCL)

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH62301

Backup Exec 12.0 Software (SCL)

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH56442

Backup Exec 11d Software (SCL)

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH50180

Symantec Backup Exec 10d (10.1) for Windows Servers - Software Compatibility List (SCL)

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH42949

Backup Exec 10.0 for Windows Servers - Software Compatibility List (SCL)

http://www.symantec.com/docs/TECH29439

Similar to the SCL we also have, Hardware Compatibility List called HCL.

...actually, if you ran Windows 7 Ultimate (I think that's the version), you can invoke a VM for Windows XP...BE 2010 is compatible with Windows XP as a media server. Connect the drive and restore it that way.

Yeah Bob,

Craig is right, you can try to install BE media server on an XP machine (as it is compatible with BE 2010) or invoke a VM for Win XP on your Win7 machine and then try to restore the pictures.

  1. Install BE media server (version 2010) on a XP machine or any other server if available.
  2. Create the Backup-to-Disk folder on the BE console and locate the already backup files (.bkf)
  3. Run an Inventory and Catalog job
  4. Find out the concerned files in the restore selection list (have the dates unchecked)
  5. Run a restore job

What I did was just install 2008 server on the machine.... got BE 2012 installed and did a catalog and inventory on the backup set(s). I tried to inventory/catalog the backup set and it got through about half way and then errored with an error that the catalog cant find the requested media. I am positive the backup set is complete (I restored off of it about 6 mos ago using 10d).

Is there anyway to run a comprehensive search of the backup set with out the folder and changer files in the directory, essesntially recreating those pointer files?

Yes, it is necessary to have the pointer files for Backup Exec to locate the folder and identify the backup files in the B2d Folder.

If you have installed BE 2012, then

1. Click on the BE Icon on the top left corner of BE console.

2. Configuration and Settings-> Backup Exec Settings

3. Choose Catalog

4. Uncheck the options:

- Request all media in the sequence for catalog operations

- Use storage-based catalogs

And then run an Inventory and Catalog.

NOTE: Sometimes even if the catalog fails after running for sometime, there is a possibility that you might get the data to be restored.

...have you tried to install BE 2010 R3 instead in trial mode and then restore that way?

The other option is to download BE 12.5 on the link below which is a lot closer to BE 10d than the others. It will run on Win2K8 (NOT R2), and then see if you get the same error.

Thanks!
