Hello,
We are attempting to restore a Windows SBS2003 server with Backup Exec 9.1 for SBS. We have loaded a fresh copy of Windows server (not promoted to a domain), installed BE 9.1 to a diffent folder, cataloged the tape, and then ran a restore on C: drive and the system state.
We get the following error (a000846a): Device could not be restored becaude an error occured while connecting to the remote agent for windows servers. Note: The remote agent IS running.
We have also attempted to restore this server by promoting it to a DC first then running the restore. We no longer get the remote agent error, but active directory is NOT restored either.
We have downloaded the Veritas white papers, and followed the instructions to the letter. No help.
This is a domain controller on a down network. Please provide any help possible.

Hello,

In order to resolve the issue, connect the computer to the local area network. In case the computer is connected to the local area network but the Network Interface card is not configured, please ensure that the Ethernet Network Interface card is configured with all necessary information. The issue occurs when the computer being restored is not on the network.

If the Remote Agent service on the Media Server is run in debug mode, the following errors can be seen:

e30 4/2/2004 20:29:26: NDMPEngine::Run(): SetupNDMPConnection() returned -472, falling back to local RANT (as specified) to perform operation.
e30 4/2/2004 20:29:26: ERROR: unknown host: NT1, err=11004

The error 11004 is a Windows TCP Socket error that indicates a DNS error.

Also please the foll technote for more information:

Thank you for the response. We had been looking for a white paper concerning this error for some time. And your answer was right on target. Unfortunately we have further woes.
We installed the MS loopback and ran a restore. The a000846a error is fixed, and the restore ran correctly up to 99%. So far the server has been running for 1 hour with the restore at 99% with no CPU or hard drive activity.
So we tried rebooting the server even with the restore job not finished. After reboot, the restore job indicated failure while restoring the shadow copy components. Note active directory information was not restored. The shortcut for utilities like DHCP server were replaced, but the icon was not. AD was not restored.
So, we started all over with another restore job. We are going to let it run all night, but do not expect a full recovery.
Suggestions?

Thanks, again

Hello,

An update. The restore job ran for over two hours at 99%, but it did finish sucessfully. Unfortunatly, directory services did not start on next reboot due to logon / password mis-match. Logged on in directory restore mode, but was unable to access the tools to modify any passwords. We are almost there.

Any suggestions?

Thanks You again
Ed

Hello,

It seems the restore worked well at night. You have mentioned that the directory services did not start due to logon/password mis-match, did you get any error when you tried to start it? If so, do write back with details.

However if we do not hear from you within two business days, this post would be marked ‘assumed answered’ and would be moved to ‘answered questions’ pool.

Regards.
